Dard-e-TISCO

Introducing myself, everyone calls me patty (not the edible one :P) or party..whatever tone it might get. By the way my real name is different from what people call me, it's vivek!! the nick is derived from my surname pateshwari :)) Enough of me now!!

Coming to the topic, Dard-e-TISCO is my eternal feeling towards feminines [this time, they really seemed so...obv it was not IIT :P] here at TATA steel :P and lotz more [ including the name of the movie, we shot there :D]. While in 3rd yr, i was worried about my internship like others... then suddenly on the last day of kshitij '08, TATA steel was to interview few of us. I didn't want to come here but i got selected against my wish of getting an FT [foreign training]. After selection in TATA steel, everyone congratulated me but it didn't satisfy me obviously. Well, i had to compromise anyhow and i did. So, here i am at TATA Steel, jamshedpur expressing myself publicly for the first time about what i felt and what am i feeling now.

Excited i was, when i caught the train to tatanagar in AC 2-tyre :) as it was going to be my 1st industrial experience. Reached the tatanagar station and was wondering as where to find the driver for the pick up. I reached the main entrance of the station and the driver found me himself, he was carrying a board with my name written on it. It seemed quite regalia sort of thing in short term. TATA indica was waiting for me outside, and i was expecting the same brand too :)) Well, afterwards, i had to wait for two more guys (bhaskar & sid) who were just to arrive. Finally, we all met and reached our hostel, GT no. 4 at about 10:30 PM. We were worried about our dinner as we all were quite a lot hungry!!! Finally the guard arranged some for us, and i was just spell bound after the dinner. My god, i wasn't expecting too good food here, but thank God, after coming from kgp, everything is jannat in terms of dishes!!! :) Well, we got our rooms, and it was again a jannat for us. There was a sofa kinda chair, another small one, a table, a bed [seemed to be a real bed], and a jug, a bottle, a glass, etc.... The surprise was yet to be found out. Well, the surprise was not as much you are thinking. It was just a bag, a safety goggles, a patta!!, and a diary with a pen :P. We were to report the next day to SNTI [shavak nanavati technical institue] which controls all the internships here. Well, i got to sleep early as i was tired a hell lot!! :(

The next day, i woke up at six... ya it was really unbelievable and i bathed and got ready for breakfast. The breakfast was so and so delicious, i couldn't control myself. There came a bus and the most fascinating character was the bus driver "PANDEY JI !!" Dressed like a real bachchan pandey, his driving skills were godlike. The background music felt like the one in real bachchan pandey's action flick in TASHAN... it was something like.. 'bachchan bachchan PANDEY..!!!' well, it seemed quite real one :P Well, I will write about him later. So, we were around 25 people, 15 from kgp [YO KGP!!] and 10 from BIT mesra. We were taken to SNTI and we were introduced to one of the most interesting characters in my Jam history!! He was none other than our beloved "Y. Ramakoti" ( the WH'Y' was always there before him!!) Some guys pronounced him like rama kutti ; furthermore, u can guess our level ;-) Well, elaborating the character, Ramakoti was a complete fruusttapa package for us during the lecture. I never opened my eyes before him on the 1st day :) Thanks to him, i completed my quota of sleep :D Since it was the 1st day, hence we were given an overview about the plant and about its functioning. The whole day was quite hectic. We slept, had coffee.... then had lunch in our hostel...again back to sleeping in the class in afty!!, then again we had a coffee.... this cycle continued. Finally at about 5 PM, we were set free. The bus [mahival travels] was quite luxury in itself. Only problem was of being a non-AC bus :( So, we were taken back to our hostel. We thought of outing in the eve, and some of us [the kgpians] walked down to bistupur [beta..yahaan ka maal-ilaaka hai]. Had some nice nazaares and we were back to our hostel.

The next day was the lecture on SAFETY [wtf], the most boring pakau treatment for us whole day :( . Every one of us was was frustrated with this safety thing. We were given safety helmet, safety shoes and that made some of us happy :D . Same cycle of coffee breaks were followed and finally we were taken bak to hostels. In the evening, some of us (kgpians) again went to bistupur for natural sceneries ;) Coming to "Bistupur", lemme tell you ppl that this was the posh area of jamshedpur, and hence we expected a lot :) we just used to roam around chhapan bhog and chhaganlal jewellers..['twas quite natural] ! :) :)

PLANT VISIT:
The next day was our plant visit, we were all excited as we were all just about to see the huge TATA steel plant...well, i was only thinking about the blast furnaces :D. We were taken to SNTI, and then Y. Ramakoti assigned some employees to show us around inside. We were given special safety jackets and Pandey ji took us to the plant :) :) for the first time. When we entered the gate, a feeling of "yoooo..!!" emerged out inside. We were taken to the blast furnace first...our guide showed us the huge storages of the mineral ores [and it was really HUGE!!] & took us inside blast furnace and showed us the tapping of hot metal from blast furnace 's bottom. Believe me, hot metal was flowing beneath us, i mean under ground storage!! :) quite a nice experience. There are 7 blast furnaces in TATA steel, and 8th one is soon coming up, i guess it has been started. So, we were given enough funda.. i was feeling quite sweety and HOT!! :(

Then, we were taken to the slab caster, i guess [i dont remember exactly :P]. There huge containers containing hot metal were transported here and there above our heads. It felt quite uneasy thinking of when will the containers be falling down and hot metal splashing on all of us. But it was quite a pleasure seeing all this :) :) we were actually roaming our eyes for real pleasures..but alas! it was a plant.. no Aish works in a plant!!

Next destination was the LD shop where shaping the hot steel into slabs was done! The best part was : we got to see a MAAL (a high standard indeed!!) inside LD shop...yooooooo!!!!! ...i guess she was an engineer there :) I inquired from sources that due to her poor family background she had to join the plant. Well, we were quite excited and surprised...obviously :)

Final one was the Hot Strip Mill, its name is quite cool right?...just think what a layman would say if he is just told to guess what it might be :P . Well, obviously, it was quite "HOT"!! The basic functioning was to make steel coils from the slabs...steel coils, that u might have seen on the MAAL-GAADI being transported somewhere. The best part was the HIGH PRESSURE water descaling on the steel surface that looked quite exciting and the coil box rolling down thin steel sheets was awesome!

We were then taken back to SNTI and we were told to report in the afty as were to be alloted our projects.

PROJECT ALLOTMENT:
We reported to SNTI for the projects and all. Ramakoti had arranged a meet for all of us with our project guides. We were to be called one by one as soon as a particular guide comes. So, we were all waiting in the classes.. I was wishing hard for a project in LD shop due to a pleasing experience there :) everyone was doing this only, i guess :) But fate may be cruel sometimes ! I was allotted Hot Strip Mill :( :( the least one, i wished for! Well, compromising was a situation developed especially for me..had to do that !

Anyways, some of us could not meet our guide ! So, we were relieved from going to work the next day. We were supposed to meet our guide first..we were quite happy about it! So, Ramakoti told us to spend time in library the next day till i meet my guide. My guide was probably sick of something, so was unable to come. I wished for the same continuum in his health :P

So, coming to the project alloted to me..it was "To Study the life of Roll-cooling and Descaling hoses in Hot Strip Mill". Well, My condition was just like that of urs now ,And the most amusing part was the subject required which included "Rubber Technology" which i didn't know nothing. I wished for a project change to LD then...was wishing a lot :) :) .. but what to do, fate was always against me from the start! The project remained the same :( ! I was left alone to suffer...i was quite confused because either the guide will ask me to study the topic and i will have to study :( or i dunno what will happen to me :(
